Web Browsers (2000-11)

Locale mechanism is not sufficient for web browsers. It is because web pages are written in various languages and various codesets and web browsers have to deal with all of them regardless of LANG variable.

Also, GUI-based web browsers may want to set the window title using the web page title. Web browsers have to convert the text from web page's encoding to the locale's encoding.

Netscape can display Japanese. Proportion of alphabets and Japanese characters is not so good because the X Window System here does not support TrueType scalable Japanese font.

Mozilla (M12) can display Japanese, though proportion is seriously poor. Japanese characters in window title is not displayed properly. This is not due to window manager.

Lynx can display Japanese, if the terminal emulator can display Japanese. Also, if the terminal emulater can input Japanese, lynx can accept it. Thus, for example, you can input Japanese keywords at search engine sites such as Yahoo.

gzilla can not display Japanese.
