I was a Debian developer since 2000-08-19 until 2009-11-28.
However, I think a part of concepts in
my work are still useful now. (Mainly concepts of internationalization,
and what works were needed to internationalize softwares. Only adoption
of Unicode and translation of messages is not enough!)
My Projects related to Linux
- Development of a package for Debian GNU/Linux
"language-env". This package
will appear in Debian GNU/Linux woody which is the next version
of Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato).
- Internationalization and packaging (for Debian GNU/Linux) of
xearth.
- Improvement of XTerm.
XTerm will support encoding specified by LC_CTYPE.
I wrote a small patch to improve XIM input.
(XTerm itself seems support only UTF-8 and other encodings
such as EUC-JP will be supported via
luit.
I hope XTerm will invoke luit automatically if needed...)
- mlterm development.
A terminal emulator which supports various encoding in the
world including UTF-8 and ISO-2022-based encodings.
- Improvement of Rxvt (CVS version).
Checks LC_CTYPE locale and automatically choose proper
encoding and font. This work is completed at Rxvt 2.7.7.
- Improvement of Eterm, just
like Rxvt.
Initial explanation for enlightenment-devel ML.
Download
the patch.
patch 2.
This work was adopted for Eterm-0.9.2 (CVS version).
- Writing a
document on i18n
at Debian Documentation
Project.
- Development of an experimental package for Debian GNU/Linux
"sensible-xtermemu"
to provide charset (locale)-sensible wrapper for
X terminal emulators. This is intended to be the default
terminal emulator for Debian GNU/Linux. Note this would
not be necessary since XTerm will support locale's encoding.
- Internationalization of X window managers
such as
Blackbox,
Sawfish,
IceWM,
Window Maker,
CTWM, and
TWM.
- Internationalization of GNU roff. It will be sensible to
LC_CTYPE locale category.
- Writing Japanese messages for a serial communication software
Minicom.
Additional Materials
- What Is Mojibake
(Disguised Characters)?
This page introduces what occurs when messages in native
languages are written using non-i18n-ed softwares.
Please understand the importance of i18n by seeing this page.
- CJK Han Unification in Unicode
Which ideographs from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are unified.
Selected 1006 ideographs of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean
version are shown. These 1006 ideographs are the most
important Japanese ideographs (which elementary school
graduates have to know). Note many of them are
regarded as "wrong" for Japanese and some of them are
entirely unreadable for Japanese, if these ideographs are
displayed with Chinese or Korean font. Thus, if you want
your software be accepted by CJK market, you should prepare
some mechanism to change fonts according to the language
of the text (not according to the user's locale).
- Interoperativity between Unicode
and CJK Local Encodings
Conversion between CJK local encodings and Unicode brings
problems because of various conversion tables.
Finished, Obsolete or Pending Projects
- Development of a package for Debian GNU/Linux
user-ja. This packages will be replaced
by internationalized language-env
package in woody, the next version of Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 (potato).
- Debianization of a mailer MH with Japanized patch. This package is
known as mh-ja. Since Debian's mh package includes Japanization patch
now, mh-ja package is not distributed any more.
- Development and packaging for Debian
GNU/Linux ('Debianization') of a mailer Mex.
I have stopped to develop Mex.
- Debian JP Project web pages
- Experimental Packages
